I asked BCH what they meant by substances and they respond with the following. I hope people make homemade holi colors with food coloring rather than paint! Happy Holi. :) The following are the chemical substances found in holi colours : Black : Lead oxide Health issues: Renal failure, learning disabilities Green: Copper sulphate causes: blindness (temporary), eye allergies, hepatotoxicity Purple: Chromium iodide Asthma, allergies Silver: aluminium Bromide carcinogenic (cancer causing) Red: Mercury sulphate Skin cancer, paralysis, blindness These chemicals (meant for industrial use, NOT for skin) are extremely harmful, in addition to this, the base of these colours are equally dangerous. Dry powder colours use asbestos talc (a known carcinogenic), chalk powder or silica. Shiny colours contain powdered glass or mica. Colours that are in paste form contain low quality oil/engine oil, which result in various complications ranging from skin allergies to complete blindness. Powders are easily absorbed by the body, and dogs groom and clean by licking which means they are ingesting all these chemicals. Their skin is much much more sensitive than ours, even without ingesting they may contract skin allergies due to the external application of the colours.
