I awoke at 3am, tasting and feeling the tears that spilled over as I slept. The rain was falling on the roof right above my head, lulling me as if it were my companion in the wee small hours of the morn. The sound, as usual, was soothing and comforting; yet something in its soft drumming deepened my sadness. I rolled over and buried my face in my pillow, praying for a return to the peaceful, uncomplicated slumber of my youth... But to no avail. So, I cried and I prayed. I prayed for what was heavy on my heart from this week: the children whose parents locked them in their rooms and starved them; the children who have never experienced the healthy, happy love of a family; the children who felt forgotten or ignored because they prayed every day for someone to save them and no one ever did; the children who have had to raise themselves because they couldnt count on their drug addicted, abusive parents and then foster parents; the children who had to face each day of school with courage even when being made fun of, taunted and teased for being different; and finally the children who had been placed?, boarded?, in a religious school, and instead of being taught how much Jesus loves them and cares for them, they have been physically tormented and humiliated. My list felt endless. I prayed that Jesus comforts and wraps His arms around them all. I prayed that parents realize how deeply and indelibly they affect their children. I prayed that parents recognize that their children learn by their example how to live in this world. I prayed that someday soon, these children will know and understand what it means to be unconditionally loved and accepted. I prayed for hope to rest in all hearts. As the raindrops have become much fewer and far between now, I roll back over and look out my window...the first glimpses of daylight in the big sky beckon me, as if to remind me that today is a new day. ♥
