I became acquainted with Mohit Ray and his works related to the demographic shift in Bengal in early 2012. I chose to stand by his concern over the growing Islamization of Bengal, and made his survey my cover photo here on facebook. Mohitbabu is not a nationalist, and his opposition to Islamism is voiced from a liberal inidividualistic position which also informs his defence of Taslima Nasrin. He has refused to stand by Bengali nationalism categorically, because he doesnt subscribe to nationalism as such. I nevertheless decided to stand in solodarity with his cause, mostly because he was unrepresented in facebook, and that his findings needed to be considered seriously by any Bengali whoever cares for his or her identity. As I have been pleasantly surprised to find his organisation Poshchimbonger Jonyo on facebook recently, I can take this burden off my chest now. Take off the older cover image, I mean. Nationalism can never be a reactionary method, it must have a constructive agenda of its own, and must not be propelled solely by a sense of anxious reaction against something or somebody. In 2012 I publicly dared to share Mohit Rays work which depcited the threats posed by radical Islam in Bengal, but it was largely a distraction from my more constructive pursuits. I am interested in cultural and literary methodologies of nationalism, and I have taken up Bengali nationalism as my practical field, as a kind of laboratory for testing and applying the theoretical findings. I wish Mohitbabu all the best in his battle against the threats of Islamism in Bengal, but this is a time when I myself can stop being the legendary Atlas. Mohitbabu, welcome on facebook. I hope Mohitbabu remains true to his secular liberal leaning, and garners the courage to criticise Hindu Samhati and Sangh Parivaar in the same breath while criticising Islamism. https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10150987973331905&set=a.10150987973306905.410774.669631904&type=3&theater
