I before e except after c is the old aphorism. But, as with most spelling rules in English, there are as many exceptions as there are examples. The same is true of English prepositions; they are idiomatic, not systematic- so, you get on the ceiling, on the wall, on the floor. Come on! These are features of English that make learning it so frustrating. However, it also means that there are always jobs for English Teachers! Haaaaaaaaaaaaa.............
