I began my classes yesterday. I am extremely excited about the upcoming semester. This semester I am taking Abnormal Psychology, Educational Psychology, Honors Shakespeare, and Concepts in Biology. My abnormal psychology course is taught by Professor Buck, who I already know from Psychology Club. The course will begin with a brief historical overview of abnormal psychology (I am an extremely passionate history lover, as many of you already know). This course sounds really interesting and I look forward to an introduction of this topic in a field I already enjoy. My educational psychology course is taught by Professor Kite, who I already knew from the Teacher Education Club. We spent most of the class period going over course stuff, though we did get to start into some of the content. This included identifying effective and ineffective strategies of a teacher in a video and sharing which topics, learned from previous psychology courses, we thought applied to the course. In the course, we will have to teach a lesson on a topic relating to the course to the class to help improve our teaching skills. I have both of these courses on Mondays and Wednesdays and they appear to be quite engaging. My honors Shakespeare course, taught by Professor St. John, was also quite interesting. In the course, we will read a number of plays by William Shakespeare, including Taming of the Shrew, Othello, King Lear, Henry V, and more. Sadly, the teacher decided to drop Macbeth, Hamlet, and Midsummer Nights Dream. I was really looking forward to covering those in the course since I never read them before. I am sure the course will still be quite interesting nonetheless. We began with a historical and cultural context of Elizabethan and Jacobean England. One other interesting aspect of the course is that we will have to recite a key passage of a Shakespearean play (at least 30 lines) to the class. It shall be a fascinating intellectual challenge. My biology course, taught by Professor Speidel, sounds equally as interesting. It appears that we will cover a variety of interesting topics ranging from blood type and parts of the heart to genetics. Unfortunately, there will be no or little coverage of evolution, a topic I find infinitely fascinating. We will also complete a short paper and presentation relating to a specific organism. I actually had a fascinating discussion with the instructor after class today, which unintentionally lasted thirty minutes and included a discussion of a number of related topics in the subject. These courses are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition to all of this, I plan to be involved in Teacher Education Club and more involved in Psychology Club, as is possible and have begun the process to become a peer tutor at the college. I look forward to formally continuing my intellectual journey this semester.
