I believe that in a world with so many pressing, desperate needs - TopicsExpress

I believe that in a world with so many pressing, desperate needs it is imperative that every member of society be personally and corporately engaged as constructive participants in the social life of the community. Children, teenagers, the unemployed, the homeless, individuals with disabilities, individuals with a mental illness, the elderly, the nonresident field worker with language barriers...all. Each brings something valuable and important to the table. 1.65 million American families with 3 million children live in extreme poverty (off less than $2 daily) sometimes going days without eating. Globally, this number approaches 3.5 billion people. My mom was one of those until she died last year. 70,000 homeless individuals wander the frozen streets of just Detroit. Globally, 21,000-30,000 children die EVERYDAY from the conditions of poverty. 8-10 million die annually. Meeting those needs will take everyone, could employ everyone. Just as the creative energies of young people in the early 60s were mobilized to win the battle for desegregation of schools and businesses, today they need to be engaged again to rebuild our neighborhoods, reimagine our society, and to run to those people and places in need. A life worth living, a life that leaves an imprint, is one that places the needs of others above their own. This is our moment.
