I believe there are four different types of people who post messages on social media. First, there are the mentally ill. Unfortunately, they have access to a computer and can post their drivel (yet society, for the most part, ignores them instead of giving them the help they need). Second, there are criminals or former criminals, who, for the most part, are unrepentant and say whatever they want (and express it however they want, usually profanely). Third, there are those people with an agenda. They are, for the most part, good people, but misguided (the arrogant try to intimidate the rest of us). Finally, there are rational people, who, while sometimes getting frustrated by the status quo, are respectful and law-abiding. In a democracy, all are tolerated, and equal in rights, yet which type should determine the way society is run? I think we all should take greater responsibility for our actions--but also for our words. That includes the people who run social media. You dont have to be a genius to understand that you dont allow a post that threatens anyone with harm. Free speech does not give anyone the right to advocate violence. Its as simple as that. If anyone has blood on their hands for the killing of the two police officers in NYC this past weekend, its the people who allowed the killer to post his messages of hate.
