I buy what I need. Not what I want. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. I come across something for instance at Love Leather.... damn if I dont leave there every effing time with something that I saw and said...Want! But thats small change. When it comes to big ticket items, I will continue to use it until it falls apart or just cant be repaired anymore. My jeep for example has over 250,00 miles on it. I keep it in good repair and its good for 300,00 miles if not more. My washer and dryer, furnace, water heater. Old in todays standards but they work. Why go out and spend if you dont have to? Take my bike as another example. I was asked once; when you gonna get a real bike? Meaning a Harley. Well, yes, I would like a touring bike with all the bells and whistles but why replace a bike that gets me where I need to go, is cost effective, runs with the so called big boys and has yet to break down on me? Oops there was that time when the fuel pump bit it a mile away from the house. But less than a $100 and a day later...back on the road. And that was three years ago. Still running strong. I rode my Bonnie until she said... enough and just quit running. My Shovel until it literally fell apart and I just could not afford to fix it anymore. After that I bought my first Metric (Jap bike) and for over 12 years my wife and I put 300,000 miles on that beast and we loved that bike unconditionally. But it to finally said...hey boss, time for me to go to that big road in the sky. Now I have my current bike and believe me when I say this... she is a keeper. I dont purchase because something new and shiny comes along. If that was the case, Id be in debt up to my ears and would have had to work long into my elder years to pay everything off. I hate debt....HATE IT. My wife and I dont buy it unless we can pay for it... in cash. I have my wife to thank for that discipline... that and the fact that she has always been squared away financially and always finds those jobs that just pays... well... pays really really good. G-d love her! And she knows how to find the good deals! I dont have much... but I have a beautiful home in a beautiful area, freedom to do what I wish, a good bike, my kayak, vehicles running, and a fantastic family to be proud of. That is a bounty. That is real wealth. So, let me get to the point regarding this posting. I noticed earlier a pic on my wall about winning the lottery. What would you do if you won the lottery? A quick search showed that one winner received $590.5 million. Now dats a whole hell of a lot of moola! After the government takes its share, there is still going to be quite the sum left to... well enjoy. But lets ask a question. What purpose would there be to all that money if all you did was spend on all the things you ever wanted? Yes... would I pay off the house, clear all debt, start a investment fund for my son and his family, treat my wife to that overseas trip she so desperately wants, buy that touring bike. Of course. But that would be a few mil. What to do with the rest? One... hire a lawyer to intercede with all the bullshit calls from investors and those looking for handouts. Bring my mom in law up here closer to her grandson and daughter in the style that she deserves to live in. My dad always told me to give back to society. He told me once that to get to the top of the mountain sometimes it makes it even more rewarding if you help someone up to the top with you. So what would my desire be? Healthcare for children, feeding the hungry, establishing a nature conservation program, contributing to programs such as 4H and FFA (Future farmers of America) to encourage our next generation of ranchers and farmers and my biggest pet peeve... advancing the needs for children with learning disabilities. I know that i may pass on penniless but when I stand before those pearly gates I can say proudly I made a difference and maybe...just maybe G-d will have a nice shiny new touring rig ready for me to jump on. Even in Heaven, there are miles and miles of back roads to explore Im thinking.
