I came across a quotation last night from Jeremy Clarkson who said that nobody can lay claim to the title of car guy without having owned an Alfa Romeo at sometime in ones life. Interesting fact - Henry Ford once said that whenever he saw an Alfa Romeo he tipped his hat as it drove by. Do I agree? I think I do but I would also add that true car guy status also requires ownership of an air-cooled Porsche and a classic Brit roadster (and likely a Miata in the future). Most of us have owned an MGB at sometime or another, while others have had any number of Sprites or Spitfires, Big Triumphs or Healeys. But the title for pure blood has to be awarded to the T-Series for their size, agility and spartan equipment. Even more so than the early TRs or a Healey 100, an early TC or TD is one of the most elemental cars that an enthusiast can drive and own. That first generation of postwar British sports cars defined the breed and made everything that followed possible. The problem is that the XK120, Healey 100 and TR2 are expensive (or getting to that stage) so having an extra sports car around isnt practicable for most of us. We just found out, however, from one of our good friends that such a car is available and really affordable at $11,000. This 1952 MGTD has its original engine and gearbox and acquired a lovely patina that we would leave exactly as it sits. It runs and drives and only needs some TLC (and a good dose of Moss parts) to make a reliable and safe driver in rain or shine. As always, theres NFI, but if youd like further information just PM us and well send you the details. Also, I am curious about what else makes the Must Own list. Anyone have any other suggestions, Brit or no?
