I came to this area five years ago from Brisbane and fell in love - TopicsExpress

I came to this area five years ago from Brisbane and fell in love with the power of the land and sea at the pointy end of the Peninsula. I got my first surfboard at age 13 and have surfed ever since. Diving is another passion that keeps me in the water. I am self-taught as a photographer and for this reason I am unrestricted in what I can do. There is a photograph in this exhibition that was taken in the middle of the night, I don’t like to give myself to technology but I have to hand it to that camera of mine it saw what I couldn’t see over a long exposure. I’ve travelled the world and found myself back here on this Peninsula. I am sustained by the community around me, the food that comes from the sea and the freedom to park that old bus of mine whichever way the wind blows. I live in my old Mercedes bus and was often at the surf breaks so my friend and I shared a wave or two and a cuppa by the bus and then my photographic work came out. My friend has been surfing this coast since he was a teenager and now far from that time those same breaks still feel oh so good. And now this is where he lives also. The land and sea invited him and his family to call this place home. They travel the country working in remote and semi-remote Indigenous communities under the guidance of the Elders cultureislife.org bepartofthehealing.org And when the work is done their home here is where they come back to. He has been a photographer for over two decades and was trained in Milan Italy as a portrait and reportage photographer. He is the author of six books Point Nepean being one. His gallery theskyisbeautiful.org showcases my collection of work. Our exhibition evolved when I asked him late last year if he would like to have an exhibition together over summer 2014/2015 at Antipodes. On looking through our photographs, we immediately themed the exhibition to environmental care and connectedness. We both easily had enough work to put together the show and chose to stand together as environmentalists and bring to you what belongs to all of us, the responsibility and opportunity to care for the land and sea. Along the Back We need an environmental presence on the Peninsula. We want as many people as possible whether they are artists, business people, retirees, young or old, standing for the very thing that sustains us all: the Earth Mother. This selection of photographs was recorded along the back beaches of Portsea & Sorrento, by two local blokes who fish, surf and care deeply for the land and sea. As the push to further develop the Peninsula continues we can look to these remaining areas as oases of what is and must remain. They are places where we can rest and feel the strength and beauty of the world uninterrupted. We would also like to acknowledge that these photographs were taken on the homelands of the Bunurong / Boonwurung people. Our exhibition is showing now until February at Antipodes 138 Ocean Beach Road Sorrento ph: 03. 5984 4217
