I can only assume that the people getting all self righteous about stores being open on Thanksgiving day plan to spend the day inside their homes using no electricity or water and consuming absolutely zero services of any kind. There are a LOT of other industries that have to be open on holidays. Our family has worked Thanksgiving. Christmas. New Years. Easter Sunday. Not in a retail capacity. Not in entry level positions. Not because we wanted to. Weve missed celebrating holidays with family. Weve been unable to travel to be with loved ones. Weve left dinner early and weve come to dinner late. Weve celebrated days earlier and days later than everyone else. It makes me sad when my friends who work retail are told that they have to work on Thursday. It made me sad when my husband had to work last Easter Sunday. It made me sad when he had to work Christmas the first year we were married. It made me sad when he had to work Thanksgiving. Its not fun. Im not debating that. I get that it sucks when your sisters boss ruins your familys plans. But if all the stores closed on Thursday, that would not actually solve the problem. This is a big country and there are a lot of people in it who want to do a lot of things all the time. If you dont want to shop (I dont) then dont. But if youre going to complain about the people who DO choose to shop I hope you keep in mind while doing so that if you have so much as an electric current or a drop of water coming into your house, SOMEONE IS WORKING FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE RIGHT THAT MOMENT. I hope you keep in mind while youre watching a parade or a football game or you know, the news, that SOMEONE IS WORKING FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT RIGHT THAT MOMENT. I hope you keep in mind while youre getting gas before hopping on the highway to your moms house that SOMEONE IS WORKING TO ENABLE YOUR FAMILY TOGETHERNESS RIGHT THAT MOMENT. I hope you can recognize that what you find disgusting about american consumerism is something that YOU HAVE PARTICIPATED IN, and WILL CONTINUE TO PARTICIPATE IN for years. You just dont care. So maybe quit with the judging about who consumes what services on what days, and ask your sister if celebrating Wednesday night would be better for her. While youre at it call up your buddy who works at the TV station and see if he wants to come over too. Load them up with leftovers and thank them for being a part of your life. Call your local firestation and ask if you can drop off some pies. On your way back from the firestation swing by the ER and drop off a couple more for the nurses. Then maybe go home and sit around and be THANKFUL that you live in a country that has running water and electricity and parades and broadcast journalism and trained emergency and medical professionals who will literally drop everything to come to your aid no matter what day it is if you so much as call. And then? Dont take it out on the retailers whove already been at work for 10 hours when all the good deals are gone by the time you get to Target on Friday morning.
