I can remember being 15 or 16, seeing a dolphin in a tank swimming around at one of those damned amusement zones in Texas. Id seen dolphins before, but not in an unprogrammed exhibition of tricks and feats, not with the chatter of family around, seated in an audience. I watched this one dolphin for a while, and I can only say that it produced a curious set of thoughts that were more at the level of feeling and wonder of something present, alive, but perhaps unknowable, or at least unfamiliar. Maybe there was something going on. It sure did feel neat to stand there quietly thinking. It makes it so very obvious that the modern construct of being raised apart from any knowledge of or intimacy with the biological world, has led to deficits of comprehension, and knowing thyself. Still attempting to make up for that.
