I cannot imagine how a conservative or a Christian could prefer Jane Austen to Dostoyevsky. Austens novels are generally tedious period pieces suited to Hollywood costume movies; Dostoyevskys every novel is a profoundly realistic exploration of human psychology and the human dilemma. THE POSSESSED or NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND could as well have been published yesterday; CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, and THE IDIOT are among the handful of classics of world literature; and DIARY OF A WRITER is perhaps the most enduring explanation of the rift between Eastern Europe and the rest of Europe--which Dostoyevsky captured in brief compass in The Grand Inquisitor, the climax of THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV. Austens books depict a bygone classs difficulties navigating a bygone world in pursuit of the most trivial of human goals: making a class-appropriate love match.
