I cant do one of those top ten lists, but I just finished The Boys in the Boat and can recommend it to anyone. Nominally, it is about the University of Washingtons 8 man crew that raced in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. But really it is about the satisfaction that comes from being on a team, and as corny as this may sound -- it captures the essence of what it means to be an American as well as anything Ive ever read. These boys are in their early years on their way to becoming the Greatest Generation and reading about how they struggled through the Depression while getting an education was both humbling and inspiring. The narrative was terrific. Even though the reader knows the outcome of many of the races I not only felt like I was there, I found my reading pace increasing as the pace of the race grew faster. danieljamesbrown/books/the-boys-in-the-boat/#.VBIWl0voZz8
