I cant remember anyone every using the term race card without having a message the klan would approve of. I cant remember blacks ever using it. I may be mistaken but I think its pretty obvious, and this short article from 2008 mentions that in playing the race card, white people usually mean 2 things: 1) they think someone has accused whites of racist behavior, unfairly, and, 2) They are playing the race card back in a sort of I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I? game. The term in its popular defintion assumes there is no racism or at least not in any instance in discussion. This is the favorite position of a group that would be guilty of racial thinking but doesnt want to admit it muchless change. First you have to convince them that we dont already give blacks too much, because most who use the term think we do. Im 62 years old now and I am here to tell you the people that use this term think they have iron-clad common sense reasons to take offense and they will not likely be learning. Most have simply not noticed it is a cultural icon, and it hinges on a fallacy -- just because a black person might unfairly accuse one of racism, it does not mean that the person in quesion is not, it simply means the black person may not be a good judge. Of course blacks sometimes cite race as a reason for trouble when it is only indirectly true, or not at all. But an awful lot of people got the memo on how race card is a code word, used primarily by one group of people for one or 2 things. Another thing this article shows from 2008. White people already felt one particular way about Jesse and Al Sharpton, and it is a white institution sharing the theme that these guys make racism worse. In 2008, the author noticed president Obama was in a different category. Since then, white people have evidently come to the conclusion he is NOT in a different category than Jackson and Sharpton, because he notices and mentions discrepancies that indicate it does still exist in measurable ways.
