I certainly deserve tonights tumbler of sangria. :) I didnt send any resumes out today or do any CAN programming, but my math research went into hyperdrive. If everything goes as I foresee, by the end of the summer I will have derived an equation for Feigenbaums constant, and thats a very relaxed schedule. In chronic overdrive, like I was today, I might even have it finished by next Friday, not counting the computer program that will check the answer. I doubt that most of you good people have heard of Feigenbaums constant, but its an extremely important, fundamental constant of nature, not too different from pi or the golden ratio. Feigenbaums constant is from chaos theory, and it describes the point at which a vibrating system makes the transition from ordinary oscillations to chaos. It has applications in every branch of engineering and physics - mechanics, electronics, aerodynamics and even nuclear systems. It should be a VERY important science paper, and if I can finish it without any hiccups, I hope to earn myself a very nice headline, in both the science news and the local paper. Just imagine how the Detroit papers would eat it up - Unemployed Engineer Solves Historical Math Problem. I could become a minor celebrity for a few weeks. With luck, Ill get the attention of the American Mathematical Society (or the American Physical Society), or get the paper into Science Magazine. All those things are, as Tom Wolfe said, the top of the pyramid. Wish me luck!! :D
