I could share the story about seeing my father stand up to a police officer at an Orioles game. Or I could tell you about my mother coming to my school to confront my teacher who accused me of cheating on my paper because a high school student cant write that well. But instead, I will you tell the story about a time I stood up for what I knew was right. I was 18 years old and I worked as an Americorps volunteer. They invited me to travel with a group from Baltimore volunteers to a National Leadership Conference at Morehouse College in Atlanta. Soon after arriving at the conference, we noticed that our group from Baltimore City (who were the majority of the black people there) had unfair living arrangements. All of the other groups were housed at hotels on Peachtree or closer to the campus but our Hotel was actually a Motel located almost on the outside of town. We also had horrible transportation/shuttles causing us to miss lunch one day, and another day we missed a few workshop sessions. We decided to speak up at the next workshop session. After all, we were standing on the same campus where Martin Luther King Jr. once studied. So we organized a meeting with the coordinator and made sure the word got back to the Baltimore leaders and soon we got results. We had been helping to build houses for Habitat for Humanity- The least they could do was make sure we got lunch! It felt good to speak up and be heard! I left out many details from this story, simply because its a post on FB and not my memoirs. But I am sharing parts of this story as an example of the fight my parents have instilled me. My parents made me. And they also made me who I am today. My birthday is a celebration of them! #ThenAndNow #Dec25th #Yup #LifeIsGoodYo Photos by The Photo Chase
