I currently serve on the Mountlake Terrace Police Advisory Board and one of my tasks for tonights meeting was to come up with 10 Safety Tips. I have come up with 20 and thought I would share them with you all for some input. 1. When walking or jogging at night, be sure to wear bright colored clothing and keep your senses sharp by not wearing headphones. 2. If you have a home alarm, be sure to turn it on not only when you are away or sleeping, but also while you are home. That sound is your first sign of an intruder as well as a call for help to arrive. 3. Take the time to get to know your neighbors. They can help look out for you and your home and be a great source of support and friendship. 4. As a means to protect your home and deter burglars, install motion lights over or near your outside doors and leave your porch light on at night. 5. When out at night, be sure to have a flashlight, to light your path and so that drivers can see you more easily. 6. When out walking your dog at night, be you’re your dog has either a reflective or LED collar. 7. If at all possible get a big dog. They are a great companion and an excellent deterrent for prowlers. 8. Teach your kids that if there is an intruder in your house they should hide and then run to the a specified neighbor’s house for help. 9. Always have a get home bag in your car with food, clothing and other supplies you may need to get home or to safety if your car in no longer viable. 10. When parking your car at night, be sure it is in a well-lit area to deter break-ins. 11. Make sure the inside of your vehicle clean and clear of clutter. The less there is to see inside the less likely it will be broken into. 12. If you are a gun owner, be sure not to leave a gun in your car at night and don’t have an NRA sticker on your car, it is like a calling card that here lies a gun within. 13. It is strongly advised that all citizens have a means to physically protect themselves. There is a limited amount of officers and it may take time for help to arrive in an emergency. 14. If you have a gun, be sure that all people with access it have proper training. Also keep in mind that marksmanship is a perishable skill and good skill and habits must be constantly maintained. 15. Always have a canister of pepper spray by your front door in a safe place away from kids reach, but can be easily accessed when opening a door to stranger. 16. When going on a family vacation, do not tell others via social media that you will be gone. It is an open invitation for thieves. 17. Your best defense is your five senses, make sure to not limit them and always have at least three senses available. 18. Learn CPR and always have a well-stocked medical kit on hand. Make sure when you use first aid supplies to replace them and annual make sure no items have expired. 19. In any situation, if you are in fear for your well-being, call the Police. They are there to serve and protect. 20. If you notice any suspicious activity, do not hesitate to call the police. Citizens are the eyes and ears of the department and they cannot do their jobs without your assistance.
