I decided to finally take the plunge today and try a taste of the hakarl (fermented shark) that I brought back from Iceland, frozen in a sealed container, triple-wrapped and instructed not to open on the plane! I had planned to try this with Michael Moore but our schedules did not gel. This fish is an old tradition in Iceland where they cured the shark by a fermentation process and hung it out to dry for 4-5 months. I was warned it is an acquired taste due to the ammonia- rich, fishy taste and usually followed by a drink of Brennivin, which is an Icelandic type schnapps. I didnt have any schnapps so just tried the shark cubes after defrosting them in the sealed container: not bad, if you like chewing on pencil erasers that have been soaked in ammonia. Would NOT order it as an entrée but I tried it; after all, I try to experience all a country has to offer!
