I decided to write this post several days after the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Event this past Saturday to make sure my feelings were not just my adrenaline speaking. Every day that has gone by since Saturday, I have not stopped thinking about my experience with the Relay. When I was approached to form a team, I felt a bit overwhelmed. Although I am an entrepreneur {my law practice} and expose leadership skills in my office daily, I felt apprehensive about leading a fundraiser event. Well, my inspiration for accepting this role was my HUSBAND, my ROCK, and my BEST FRIEND Larry who is a Cancer survivor. Thus, I accepted the challenge. I reached out to friends, family, and business owners and asked them to donate and sponsor my team. Much to my surprise most people were eager to help me raise money. I will make this post short so I will share one on my fundraising experiences. I am blessed to have met Laura Santa Cruz. Laura is a mom of two beautiful kids who attend my son’s school {her daughter also plays soccer with Krishelle}. Laura is also a Stella & Dot stylist. I approached Laura about hosting a trunk show and she immediately agreed, offered her house {mine was under construction} and treated all of those who attended with the utmost love. The event was beautiful and I got to learn about an amazing jewelry company I had no idea about. Well, Laura presented me with a check for the donation shortly after the trunk show and I was FLOORED to see the GENEROUS donation she gave us out of her commission. Laura I can’t thank you enough you for all you did for me, my husband, my family and Cancer fundraising. You are an AMAZING human being! Thank you to my friends Jessica Perdomo, Dania Alonso and Maria Morgan for purchasing Stella & Dot jewelry and contributing to the fundraiser! I also thank donors and sponsors including Adam Clarin, Adam Hellman, Monica Bisbal, AllStar Event Photography, Wilson, Washburn and Forster Insurance, Scheckner & Hetenyi PL, Power Party Events, Brit Olom Tours, StationAmerica, Hirni’s Florist, Canton Restaurant, and Wendy Levy-Jackson among others. I also thank my friends Hilda McCarthy, Jessica Perdomo & Vanessa Travieso for purchasing luminary candles in honor or memory of their relatives. On Relay day, I thank Adam Clarin and my co-captain {and his beautiful wife}, Adam Hellman, Monica Bisbal, Jodi Orsham, Luis Cobas {and his beautiful wife} for helping me set up, decorate, sell food and volunteer their time during the event. I could not have done it WITHOUT you! On this day, I also met beautiful people including survivors, fighters and relatives of those who had lost someone. Families including mine shared laughs, ate yummy food and played various games, and met other families struck by Cancer and their experiences. The most memorable time for me was the Luminary candle lighting. When all of the lights went out at 9:00 pm, candles were lit and we walked around the candles while listening to Amazing Grace sang by a young lady who had lost family members to Cancer. In summary, there is so much more that WE CAN ALL DO to help create awareness and raise $$ to fight this disease but I thank GOD for giving my family a chance to have been part of such a wonderful event that I hope to participate each and every year. Last but not least I want to thank my mother Stella for her countless hours of support and help with all of the things my family is involved with!
