I despise sports fans who are just in it for the championships and pride. I was raised to enjoy athletics as a whole. I was raised by a guy who preached team, work, and joy in sports. I grew up hearing stories of excitement from these games like watching the pitching of the 1954 Cleveland Indians (3 20 game winners), the sound from the crack of the bat when Bob Horner hit the ball, or the tenacity and speed with which Herschel ran the football. You should be able to value memories and accomplishments more than status. Ive seen great people and players give back to the game even though they didnt achieve many great feats. I wasnt the greatest player ever, and I didnt win as much as some others, but as I get older I realized how much I enjoy it. I cant say Ive ever been given a championship trophy or champion status, but the game (of baseball) has given me more lessons than I can try to count. Its not about bragging rights, even though sometimes they can feel like the highest of highs, its about the love of the game. I hope we never lose sight of that.
