I did a column on this maybe 25 years ago. My wife was a fairly new teacher, probably making $10,000-$11,000 a year, $5.50 per hour (per SCHEDULED hour, not counting grading, dances, ball games, conferences etc.). A state legislator told her teachers were nothing but babysitters and should be paid accordingly. At the time, we were paying sitters $1 an hour. So multiply that by, say, 25 kids, and if shed been paid by the hour, minus summer vacation, she would have been making $40,000+ per year. Nothings changed. Please think about this next time you bash the overpaid teachers and their powerful union.
