I did not watch the State of the Union silliness, but I did just see a clip on Stossel where the President claimed the erroneous women make 77 cents for every dollar men make. This brings to the fore the error in all our public discourse on economics, science, nutriton, education,etc. That error is the average american, or women, men etc. These examples do not exist, they are on paper only. Women make less money because they do different jobs, not because they do the same job, for the same amount of time, with the same education and get paid 23% less. Averaging individual salaries, grades, test scores, incomes are all meaningless without individual context, but they make spectacular emotional straw men to assail.
