I did something good today. I saw a girl huddled and crying near a Skytrain entrance, and she was just sobbing her heart out. She had no shoes, I noticed as I passed her by like so many others. I saw some new but ugly royal blue canvas slip-ons next to the garbage can so I ran back and gave them to her. These make-do shoes were much too large. So, I said well, I can give you 1-way bus fare to get to the big United church in the DTES near Main and Hastings where there are plenty of resources, and heres $5 for your dinner, which is all I can spare. When I asked Whats wrong? she said she was homeless and had not showered or changed for a long time and theres more than that, but I wont bother you she said. Go there, and they will help you I told her go in your stocking feet; just go, K? She clammed up after that, but Id like to believe that a little human kindness goes a long way whenever people are down and out. With no further response other than more wretched sobs, I carried on home on the SkyTrain where I sobbed silently behind shielded eyes fervently hoping and praying someone I know who has spurned help from family and friends will find just the right kind of help from another stranger right when they need it.
