I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life. – Steve Jobs Have you ever had to break a commitment? Have you ever had to come to the realization that you were not the best person for the job? Did you show integrity in terminating that commitment or did you hold on until you were asked to leave? I experienced this firsthand after I was diagnosed with my condition. I had to leave a couple of positions because my bandwidth and health no longer made me the best person for the job. It was challenging. It was hard on my pride and ego. It was tougher than tough. What I was missing was the great opportunity waiting on the horizon after I let the past go. I created the concept and vision for the Chronic Illness Foundation of America, Inc. Oftentimes after a diagnosis, or other circumstances, we are forced to move on to different opportunities. Make no mistake - these are opportunities. Even after reasonable accommodations are made, your former position may not be the best fit for you, your constituents, your colleagues, the bottom line, your reputation or your self-esteem especially when something extraordinary could be on the horizon. Citizens, do a sober assessment of the positions you hold in your life. If you are not the best person for the job, let go on your terms. It feels much better than being asked to leave. You could be delaying something amazing. Be well. V. CIFA-USA.org
