I disagree. While the ranked 105 is a powerful number - I dont think that it is ethical for the west to impose its gender norms on other cultures without thoroughly researching and considering what they are seeing. Furthermore, I get really turned off by the 1/3 aspire to be housewives and 70 percent quit their jobs when they have children. I think there is a lot to be said for a society that allows women to do either of those things, without judging them for somehow failing the rest of women by wanting to focus on raising their children. The WEO and IMF might think that more women in the workforce is the answer to Japans economic problems, but both organizations have gutted and destroyed the economies of many developing countries - so I wouldnt be too quick to trust everything they say. At the end of the day, and this is something Ive been thinking about a lot recently, as we automate and globalize, we are rapidly approaching a time when people are going to have to stop working (at least in production). We already produce far more than we consume (if the shops in Sham Shui Po are any indicator), and the constant drive towards greater production is untenable. Furthermore, younger generations arent placing the same social status on new and instead are looking towards bespoke. This means that the new cool is becoming old and/or artisan. I love cute things, I love pink. I dont think that I am undermined by pink or cute. I do my work in heels and makeup; I try to look my best everyday. Does that me less of a researcher? No. Nor do I think that my desire to be a mother at some point should bring any disrespect to me
