I disagree strongly with the premise that aliens would always be friendly because they would have no reason not to be. Barring all possible cultural reasons for hostile action against other species, the idea that mere distance, and hence cost, would prove sufficient deterrent to make any contact non-trivial seems to me to ignore any hitherto unforseen advances in technology that would make such encounters possible. Regardless, I find the a-priori assumption of AI to be hostile or indifferent to humanity to be flawed as well.
