Uckfield Town Centre Roadworks. The pavement has been widened - TopicsExpress

Uckfield Town Centre Roadworks. The pavement has been widened on the section of road from Framfield Road to the traffic lights. This was not a heavily used section of footpath, compared to the High Street. Before the improvements, if the line of traffic intending to go up the hill towards Church Street was long, it was possible to drive down the left hand side of the traffic and make a second lane at the traffic lights. This had the advantage of helping to clear the junction at Framfield Road, as you had two long lines of traffic. Under the present arrangement, the widened footpath and the reluctance of motorists to move over towards the central line of the road, means that two lines of traffic cannot be formed until the river bridge is reached. The traffic backs up through the Framfield road junction and a mini grid lock is formed. The situation is not helped by motorists entering the box junction before their exit is clear. This means that when the traffic lights change, it is sometimes impossible for the Framfield Road traffic to turn right before the lights change again. I live in Framfield, but consider Uckfield to be My Town. It is, after all, the place where I do most of my shopping, go to the cinema and catch the train. It is next to impossible to do any of this without driving my car. The same is true of the residents of all the villages surrounding Uckfield. Whilst the residents of Uckfield were consulted about parking arrangements, and voted ten to one to keep High Street parking, the residents of the surrounding villages were not. I can find nobody who remembers being consulted. I understand that the petition supporting High Street parking now has over 4,000 signatures. Will the councils show that they are listening to the people who elect them and modify their stage two plan? We will be holding an open public meeting on Monday 8th Dec at the Alma Arms, Framfield Road, Uckfield, starting at 7.00pm. I feel quite sure that this is one of the many subjects that will come up.
