I do like WILL SELF , although I disagree with his rather cynical view of the role and function of TATE MODERN , a fabulous and huge gallery (or series of galleries) that houses, among many masterpieces, some incredibly important work by the great conceptual magician JOSEPH BEUYS . Beyond even that, the famous Seagram Murals by MARK ROTHKO are also displayed there in all their sombre and vibrant intensity . These magnificent works by these uniquely brilliant artists have found their home in Tate Modern , which is one of the few galleries in the world with adequate space to accommodate them . Since admission to The Tate is free of charge and the gallery attracts more visitors by far than any art gallery in the world , Mr. Selfs concerns about the gap between the haves and have-nots of society being widened by the existence of this truly egalitarian institution are bizarrely misplaced in a critique which leaves questions about whether the interesting and redoubtable intellect of WILL SELF, with its seemingly purely cerebral understanding of what art does to people is, despite its great grasp of side-issues , capable of understanding quite how deeply beneficial TATE MODERN is to the people of the UK . I am delighted to learn from this article that TATE MODERN is to be expanded to house even more great art from around the world . Something else that this article has made me happy about is the fact that THE PHYSICAL IMPOSSIBILITY OF DEATH IN THE MIND OF SOMEONE LIVING by the wonderful DAMIEN HIRST has - thanks to an extremely altruistic benefactor , been acquired by TATE MODERN for the benefit of us all . ♥
