I do not believe that short stories or stories in general require a climax or intense character development (and even any at all). It all has to do with your target audience and the genre of the story of which you are writing. Climaxes are required for the easily distracted and frankly unworthy readers. I do not write for people of whom require an explosion, a secret pregnancy or mysterious plot twist every 8 pages. My stories are based around the central theme of pondering and the questioning of various aspects of life. I try to write my stories in a way that focuses on the main characters thoughts - who is this character? What eye colour do they have and what is their favourite ice-cream flavour? - irrelevant. These aspects of the story arent required and take the attention away from what I try to target - the questioning. I try to write in way that makes the reader question the topic and see life through a different lense. Dont get me wrong, Im not saying a climax and character development is redundant, Im just saying that it isnt a compulsory requirement of a story. In the real world, and from someone of whom works in a bookstore and MUST read particular books and read pre-releases - I know for sure that there are MANY outstanding books which barely touch if not at all upon character development and does not include a climax. Perhaps Im just butt hurt, but it still just frustrates me that Id get marked down due a teacher requiring there to be excitement (her words) and character development. If I could go back and re-do the exam, there is no way that Id change a thing other than my lack of attention towards punctuation. Grr! ;c shitty mood now.
