I do not think many people realize that sandstone is not a solid stone but a composite of highly compressed sand. When left wet or in a wet enviroment it will turn back to a pile of sand. The surface of the Petroglyphs is this way, hard when dry and slightly softer when wet. The boulder that fell is in a small echo system of its own. This is a very wet and high humidity that allows a heavey moss to grow on the sandstone. This combination is depermental to the glyphs that survived the fall. The rock is soaking moisture up out of the ground below and staying damp, We need to clear away all debri from around it and dry it out.
