I do not want to hijack Crystals post just below on the type of bit to start with. Most posters are saying French link (or some type of double joint) with one or two mentioning rubber mouth, mullen, etc. All are fine choices. What I dont understand are the posters saying full cheek, D ring or eggbutt The cheek pieces have VERY little to do with the action of the bit or the preferences of your horses. The mouthpiece is the critical part!! Granted a D or full cheek can help a stiff horse in bending (slighty), or prevent a rider pulling a bit into their horses mouth (I wont go there!!) and a loose ring snaffle is FAR superior for very slightly more movement encouraging a horse to accept the bit and come onto the aids. (As an aside...there is an old argument that a loose ring can possibly pinch...maybe a very old, worn one might...but in over 50 yrs of experience and well over 4 dozen OTTBs, and observing 1000s more, Ive yet to see it!) So...lets discuss cheekpieces of snaffle bits alone...what is your preference and WHY??
