I dont get it. The downside presented here, seems to be that some people will not be proactive enough and therefore will not engage themselves, and fall through the cracks. But this happens now, with the current model. The real question, IMO, is which model looses more of those students? My preference is generally for a mix of the best parts of emerging and traditional methods, but the implication here seems to be that the new model will destroy the old, or at least make it all but inaccessible to the 99%. If this is true, it brings us right back to the question of which has bigger cracks. It would seem to me that if this new model becomes the norm, not much would change, except for the cost of education, and the commercial industrial model that surrounds higher education. The same groups of people who now think that education is valid and important will continue to do so, but will now look for it somewhere other than colleges. I must confess, I do not know which model has bigger cracks. I have no idea which system will work better. I love the democratizing effect that the internet has on knowledge, but I also prefer in-class teaching, as it takes much of the pressure off me to address me own procrastination problems. Sure I might still wait for the deadline, but it will get done. ... Now that I think about it, it seems that what I need are the deadlines. Hmmm Ill have to think on that some more. Now Ive gone off topic. LOL What do you think?
