I dont kNoW about yall, but Im pretty excited about school starting back up! This year, Ill be teaching at 3 different colleges....woohoo! And....Ive decided to kick off the year by suggesting my students do this: - a ton of listening week 1 - pick a solo by week 2 (not necessarily written for trombone) with which theyre unfamiliar. And, learn it by ear. Not an improvised solo. Could be: aria, sonata, multi-movement concerto, old/new, etc. Anything that they LOVE upon first hearing, with a published piano accompaniment. Cuz... - schedule a Time early in semester to perform on student recital, from what theyve written, or preferably all by ear. (when the published part, with piano accompaniment, shows up....resist all urges to peak:) Thats how I learned the awesome Sonata by Eric Ewazen....and I discovered soooooo much. So, if youre a student looking for a very worthwhile project, have at it:) Later, at some point, do consult the score. Youll learn much about how the performer you were studying chose to interpret the ink! That can be revelatory. Yay, Music! Make this your best academic year yet. Rock On.
