I dont normally comment to any real extent on celebrity deaths, - TopicsExpress

I dont normally comment to any real extent on celebrity deaths, but in the case of Robin Williams I feel a need to. Not because of the fact he died, although tragic given that he was no real age, but more so due to the reason he died. Ive not spoken of this as publicly as this before, but a couple of months ago I was diagnosed as suffering from mild depression and am currently on antidepressants to help with it. While Im lucky in so much that my battle has been a mere hiccup compared to that of many, it has certainly not been easy. Words cannot describe the despair and darkness a person with depression feels. The medication Im on helps tremendously, but I still have days when I feel like I have nothing to keep me going. It drains you to the point where you dont think youll ever pick yourself up, and it is beyond heartbreaking to me that Robin Williams reached a point where he felt his only way of dealing with it was to take his own life. I only hope that a positive can come from this horrible situation and help to make people realise that depression is not just someone feeling a bit sad, its not just someone feeling a little bit sorry for themselves, and it is absolutely not just someone seeking attention. Those who think this way have no understanding of exactly what depression is, and sadly many people suffering from it dont feel they can seek help for fear of these cruel misperceptions. We need more awareness and understanding of depression, and mental health in general. Nobody else should lose or take their own lives as a way of dealing with it.
