I dont play out much. I have absolutely no aspirations to see my name in lights or to do the funky chicken down funky Broadway. However, I do play at open mics occasionally, and therein hangs a tale. I dont like to sing into microphones. Ive played at Luckenbach pretty often and found it to be a nearly perfect environment for me.... No microphones, no amplification, and generally enough beer flowing that I think I sound ok.... The more beer you drink, the better we sound is an oft-repeated line out there.... Ive played open mics where Ive sat in front of the stage gear and done everything unamplified. My guitars are certainly loud enough to get away with it, and I know I am, too. Im very used to the sound of my Collings guitars unamplified, and I like them that way. I went to an area open mic for the first time the other night and realized that the room was just too big, with far too many people, to go the strictly acoustic route. I happened to have brought a CW Mahogany with a K+K Pure Mini in it, so I plugged in. There was a stage monitor of sorts behind me.... I dont want to overstate this, but the results were excellent. I hit a G chord, just to sort of get the feel of everything, and was stunned with the sound. It was so surprising that I stopped, picked up the guitar and mumbled something about how much I liked this guitar.... Several people came up to me after things were over and asked about the guitar/pickup. One guy said the guitar sounded like a pre-war Martin.... Whenever anyone says something like this to me, I always wonder how many pre-wars theyve been exposed to.... Unfortunately, I had forgotten what type of pickup was in the guitar, so I couldnt say much about it. A couple of the people asked about the guitars price..... Im afraid interest may have dropped a bit when I told them.... Anyway, of youre in the market for a pickup, I can recommend without reservation the K+K Pure Mini. Im certainly impressed with it. Ill assume that if you are reading this, there not much I can tell you about Collings guitars.... :-) (Ill be posting this on the Collings Forum, also. Sorry for the redundancy.)
