I dont remember the time or place many years ago that I met the lovely Edward Hermann, but he was immediately nice, funny, and as familiar as if wed always been friends. He was always at the biggest concours events--Amelia, Meadowbrook, and Pebble Beach, which he emceed for years. There was the awful year when the monsoon almost shut Amelia down. But the Ritz Carlton threw open its ballrooms to as many cars as it could roll in. All day, drenched, muddy fans trudged down Ritz corridors, following the directions of Ed and his wife Starr, whod stationed themselves at strategic locations. It you joined the Dawn Patrol who came out before the sun rose to watch the Pebble Beach cars roll onto the field, you could see the towering Hermann at the front, giving an impromptu background history of each car to the crowd around him. I stood as rapt as everyone else around him. He belonged to the car world in a very real way, it required no acting. He loved us and he knew us as we knew and loved him. He will be deeply mourned and missed. RIP, Ed, and our prayers go out to his wife Starr, and daughters.
