I dont think I have ever posted a political driven status, but in light of recent news I feel compelled to share a few views, and will try my best to be clear and concise. Firstly, after reading the entire trial, I encourage others to at least read some of the testimonials surrounding the case, which can be found here scribd/doc/248128351/Darren-Wilson-Testimony I am someone who strongly thinks the circumstances outlined in the trial are unusual enough that an investigation should have been held and charges pressed. That being said, whether or not you think Wilson should have faced charges, I have heard people make claims on both sides of the spectrum that are not supported in the known evidence. I believe knowing what was presented in the trial is essential to holding arguments about the (in)justice at hand, and not educating oneself to the what happened in the trial hurts actual discussion. Secondly, while I am absolutely against the rioting happening and can never condone violence as an effective agent for social reform, I am also outraged at those who are using the rioting as an excuse for refusing to confront conversations of broader issues that plague this country. To write off what is happening in Ferguson as merely anger-driven people taking advantage of circumstance is to tune out the voices asking for peace and real conversation, of which there are an incredible amount. These are the conversations that need to be engaged in, and allowing the focus to swing elsewhere causes further harm and continues a sad cycle that has long revolved in America. Given what Ive experienced in my short and admittedly rather sheltered life, I would be lying if I said I was hopeful that this will actually happen. Please. Surprise me.
