I dont usually like to share personal things. But recently one of my old bosses just retired. And I just wanted to take some time to share her story. For those who dont know, Cindy Lee was the CEO ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cindy_Lee )of T&T, a Chinese grocery chain in Canada. She has taught me a great deal in one short year at T&T and Loblaw. She told me I needed to have more 霸氣 (Stubbornness + Relentlessness + Domineeringness) to accomplish what you believe in. She had shown so much pride in her culture and that has really changed Canadian retailing. She brought in different cultural elements into her store and elevated the competition and ultimately benefited the consumers. Did you know Walmart in Canada has live fish tank that you can pick fresh seafood from? And who do you think brought that to Canada first? And successfully did that without stinking up the whole market. There is even fresh dim sum at the market! Shes definitely used that 霸氣 to grow her company to the best Asian supermarket in the whole world. And I am not joking when I say that. For all my American friends, if you have a chance to go up to Toronto or Vancouver, check it out, and compare it to the smelly 99 Ranch that you no longer go to, or the overpriced Japanese markets that you go eat ramen at. You can see that T&T has really taken shopping for Asian groceries to a whole other level. To my friends in Asia, yes you have the night markets, the local daily markets, and your 7-11s, but T&T is all that combined. Theyve taken customer first to heart and it really shows. To my Canadian friends, you guys are lucky and dont take T&T for granted! She told me that I have 2 great 軍師/military advisors behind me and had personally mentored me in the one year I was there.
