I dont usually post on politically sensitive subjects on FB because all it does is encourage fights. So Im just going to say this - I was a big defender of the Affordable Care Act ever since it was passed into law. I saw potential problems but figured they would be ironed out or addressed by its launch. But for the last two days I have tried to use the exchanges (in two states no less, since I still have residence in Oregon but am working and living in CA). I have not spoken to a real person yet. Ive been given recorded messages saying to leave my number and someone will return the call. No one has. Today you cant even reach the phone line, you get all circuits are busy. The reason I want to talk with someone is by shopping on the exchanges, it appears the most affordable plan I can get that will do ANYTHING outside of kicking in for serious and expensive medical problems is somewhere between $550 and $700 a month. With BIG deductibles. I am making a moderate salary after years of unemployment. I have a huge mountain of debt. This is not affordable to me. This is putting a gun to my head to commit to something I still cannot afford (I had to give up medical coverage several years ago when it hit $720, the second largest monthy bill next to my rent). Im sure the ACA is helping several economic groups get covered. For someone in my situation its absolutely no help. If I finally talk to a real person and they point my toward a viable alternative Ill be happy to amend this post. But I tend to think thats not likely. Very, very disappointing.
