‘I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up,” said Brad, a forty-five-year-old client I once counseled at a technical college. Brad’s employer---for whom he had worked since high school—was going out of business. There weren’t any other local jobs matching his skill set. Suddenly, Brad could no longer rely on achievements to give life meaning. As a result, he began to really think about questions he’d brushed off in the past regarding the meaning of his life. Brad expressed a need to find his life’s purpose. The love he and his family had for one another mattered, but he already knew that. It provided solace, but Brad needed more.
