I don’t normally post long posts, but this one is special. It involved a wedding. An old high school buddy of mine finally married his other half—after being together more than a decade and raising their two adopted children. The love and joy of the 100 plus people in attendance was amazing. And, being the fun-loving gay men they are, they had fabulous drag queens in the ceremony. (Hence the photo.) The only sad moment was when I realized that the parents of one of the grooms had refused to come. How do people hurt their own children (and themselves) by such an act? It’s one thing to hold a religious belief, but to allow it to harm others—especially your own children—is tragic. Life is too short and too precious to let moments like this pass you by. I mention this because, through the evening’s smiles and tears of joy, one beautiful lesson was made clear: the family and friends that you create on your own through love and respect are what makes life joyous and meaningful. My friend, his spouse, their children and everyone who joined in the celebration of love were reminded of exactly that. And celebrate it we did. The drag queens were just a bonus.
