I don’t talk politics on FB much but I would like to make some - TopicsExpress

I don’t talk politics on FB much but I would like to make some comments about my experience of working at the polls in Biddeford yesterday. The turnout was huge, just shy of a presidential year statistically. I stood outside most of the day with State Senate Candidate James Booth while he shook hands with folks for 12 hours straight. Jimmy ran one hell of a campaign and it was tough when the numbers came in that the Biddeford vote really made the difference in his defeat. In fact, all Republican candidates in Biddeford but one lost. We worked very hard this year but our local results were disappointing. District 12 had a strong conservative independent candidate (Barbra Thompson) who with her husband Brian worked tirelessly going door-to-door but they were defeated by the Democratic candidate as well. I applaud the Thompson’s fine efforts. Biddeford did get some support from Governor LePage (he made 3 campaign stops here). Clearly Governor LePage’s visits made some difference for him, because when I saw the tally shortly after the polls closed he only lost Biddeford by 200 votes…from that alone I was pretty confident that he was going to retain the governorship. The bear baiting question probably helped LePage as well and I saw a lot of angry-faced hunters storming toward the polls. Biddeford’s electorate seems to be pretty much set in stone and it will be difficult to change. While most of the country moved to the right, this town stayed mostly pat. There is no Republican presence at the local college and support outside of our small city committee is scant at best. Some regular participation from other Republicans besides our core group would help…and not just during a Presidential election! This was a great experience for Debi and I. I am VERY proud of Debi for jumping into the ring for House District 11; the odds are always long in Biddeford when registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 3 to 1 but she gave it a go! Hopefully Debi’s new show on Biddeford Public Access will hopefully start to chip away the stone. Gotta start picking up those campaign signs… Now that these battles are over, may God bless our governor and legislators so they make wise decisions for our State, citizens and future.
