I drew a blue deer running With chalk as she played Hopscotch beside me on the sidewalk. A futile gesture. The weatherman says rain Is coming. I rub my finger along the roughness of the sidewalk, Smoothing the lines of long, slender legs. She counts, 1, 2, 3, 4... I did it! All the way to 10 mommy! I dust off my fingers and look up at the sky As she makes her way back to 1. And now, from inside my window, There is a blue deer running Off the sidewalk, Into the grass, down the gutter, With the 1 2 3 following behind, on their way to the ocean. And the thunder crashes, And the lightning makes the sidewalk Shimmer and go grey, silver, grey, Behind the blue deer Running away.
