I ended my HIV medication fast which was imposed by the economic reality of a budget that could not stretch far enough to afford a monthly co-pay of 833.00 a month. My T cells have fallen and my percentages were dropping into dangerous territory the final straw was two opportunistic infections, things I havent had to deal with since the early 90s. I didnt qualify for any help from the manufacturer because I was on Medi CARE and I made two thousand dollars too much to qualify for ADAP assistance so I had to go without for the last nine months. I figured I would have to do the same thing everyone does when they are desperate, use a credit card. I knew Walgreens didnt give a damn about me and would not help with the cost of the medications and I was too exhausted to try and shop the drug stores to see what the lowest price might be so I could lessen the economic impact. I called what used to be called Moms Pharmacy next to Lifelong AIDS Project on Capitol Hill (now AHF) and arranged to have my Stribild prescription filled. I told them about my predicament and they set up an account for me so I can pay for my medications in installments AND still get the medication I need right now, not a lay away program but a program that understands the reality of life on a fixed budget. When I got to the Capitol Hill location to pick up my meds the place was full of other PWAs and a WONDERFUL STAFF of our Gay Brothers. I havent felt so proud of my community in many years! God Bless the people who created AHF and God Bless the wonderful staff who care about each of us as people.
