I especially think that our preconceived notions lead us to choose - TopicsExpress

I especially think that our preconceived notions lead us to choose the negative when we have a negative view of the bearer of any information. It takes a lot of thinking to overcome it. Pick your favorite demonized politician. For example, for some, Obama could save puppies from drowning and hes still a socialist, communist, anti-American Kenyan. I dont think hes a savior (not in the least bit), but the hyperbole associated with him is incredible. For example, Romney promises unemployment down to 6% by 2017 and Gingrich promises $2.50 gas prices during the 2012 Presidential campaign season - all the while stating that they could do that and Obama couldnt. Now, I know that no President has ultimate control of these - especially the gas price; but the point is unemployment is lower than 6% and the average price of a gallon of gasoline is lower than $2.50 nationwide...and it is 2015. Instead of focusing on the positive and being realistic about where we have to continue to improve (which everyone states), some just ignore their old points and hit other negatives and the hyperbolic statements just keep on going. If our individual responses to the same statistics (unemployment and gas prices for this example) are dependent on the person that is President, as opposed to the stats themselves, then we have a problem. Some prefer to get stuck in the negatives about particular people based on ideology alone. If thats how one thinks, then the best ideas will never come to the surface and be implemented. Theyll be tossed away due to intransigent preconceived frameworks (of all political, racial, gender biases, etc). https://youtube/watch?v=7XFLTDQ4JMk
