I feel most comfortable writing in third person. When Im collaborating on memoirs, of course I write in first person and it feels natural. But when writing fiction, I cant do it. I dont know why. Heres a paragraph from a work-in-progress, in first person and then again in third person. Which do you prefer as a writer/reader? I let my head drop against the back of Ryan’s office chair and immediately started crying. It was a completely foreign act and even as it was happening, I was totally baffled and freaked out by it. I sat up to face Ryan and he was just as flustered. He was looking furtively all around the tiny office, trying to find a tissue I guess. But every millisecond, he looked back at me, his eyes wild and disbelieving. Like Id just sprouted snakes on my head and started speaking in tongues. He actually looked afraid of me. Which dried me up and brought the crying jag to an abrupt end. OR Dana let her head drop against the back of Kevins office chair and immediately started crying. It was a completely foreign act and even as it was happening, she was totally baffled and freaked out by it. Dana sat up to face Kevin and realized he was just as flustered. He was looking furtively all around the tiny office, trying to find a tissue. But every millisecond, he looked back at Dana, his eyes wild and disbelieving. Like shed just sprouted snakes on her head and started speaking in tongues. He actually looked afraid of Dana. Which dried her up and brought the crying jag to an abrupt end. So? Which one?
