I fell asleep in the small hours of the morning watching and listening to Senator Ted Cruz address a virtually empty United States senate on defunding the “Patient and Affordable Care Act”. I awoke this morning thinking of Cruz’ words…and the words of Thomas Jefferson. The United States house of representatives and senate have used rulemaking to concentrate the power of the federal government in very few hands. The lion’s share of power in the federal government today rests in the hands of the president, senate majority leader and the speaker of the house and that power is often wielded with a heavy hand. The federal government is supposedly limited to the powers specifically granted it by the Constitution but it seems to require a very large and expensive work force in order to execute those limited powers. As of September 13, 2013, the executive branch employs a total of 2,102,269 employees, of which 1,877,990 are permanent full-time employees with the remainder listed as part-time employees. These figures do NOT include military, postal service legislative and judicial employees. The latest figure on the cost to the taxpayers’ are from late 2011 and indicate a projected 2012 cost of $177 billion annually. The people elected to represent us and the employees of the government hired to serve us all too often treat us with contempt rather than courtesy and disdain rather than respect. Our elected representatives make decisions against the will of the people, enact those decisions into law and then exempt themselves from those same laws. “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends [life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness] it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government...” ~ Thomas Jefferson There is nothing wrong with the Constitution or our form of government: the problem exists in the majority of people who represent us…and in US - for being too apathetic for far too long. We (you and I) have allowed this cancer to grow undisturbed. The surgery for this cancer is no longer optional but mandatory and is required immediately. The surgery can no longer be attempted with a scalpel but now must be done with a cleaver. It will not be pretty… Feeling the false sense of protection their power seemingly provides them, the wielders of power will not willingly relinquish the power they have acquired. "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." ~ Thomas Jefferson How committed are YOU to the restoration of America? What sacrifices will YOU willingly make for the future of your children and grandchildren? Larry R. Fontenot Please feel free to share this if you find any value in these words…
