I finally decided on leasing a 2013 Lexus RX-350. This is the first time that I have leased a vehicle, and there are some good advantages to this. There was no money down and an extra $2000 rebate on the lease option, as well as a $200 per month lower cost. Buying usually involves a 10% down payment. The only real drawback to the lease is that there is a milage limitation and penalty cost if you exceed the milage. Since I didn’t need a down payment, I decided to keep my Ford Escape and put a little money into it to spruce it up a bit. That way I have a backup vehicle and that will reduce the milage requirements on the leased vehicle. In addition, there is a multicar discount for insurance, so the cost to add the leased vehicle to my insurance is not much more than if I only had 1 vehicle. Basically the older vehicle is cheap to keep and operate, and good for short trips, or even long ones. It is still a comfortable ride, and has no major mechanical problems. The paint is in excellent condition, and soon the interior will be fixed up as well. A new set of floor mats, and not many guys would object to driving it with its Black on Black color scheme. The new RX-350 is the luxury ride while the Ford Escape is something to take on a camping trip. It’s the older Escape body style based on a truck frame and not the wimpy new design of the compact SUVS. I happen to like it, though my wife is tired of it. She wanted to sell it to a friend for $2000, and there is no way I would let that happen. When it is cleaned up a little, it is easily worth 5 grand or more with all of the power options and the sun roof. It should be good for at least another 2 years or 20,000 miles before I expect any costly repairs. I recently had it taken to Midas, they test drove it, checked the cooling system, and couldn’t find any problems. It does have a problem with false alarms from a faulty door lock switch, but that can be taken care of easily. While my wife has lately been cutting down Ford, I have owned 5 Fords in the past, and I happen to like them. It may be true that they need a lot of care and maitainance at times, they have good power trains and I have gotten well over 150,000 miles on all of the Fords that I owned. I have also owned 2 Mazdas and Ford owns Mazda. Those were also good reliable transportation and Ford is the only American car company that hasn’t had to have the government bail them out.
