I finally got around to reading this. I agree that student evals should not be the be all and end all of evaluating teaching. Peer review of the classroom and teaching materials helps a lot. So does soliciting alums after theyve been out awhile. That said...as an associate dean and dept chair and a member of our university tenure committee, Ive read thousands of evals of faculty all over the disciplines and levels of seniority and demographics. The number that matched the horror stories here are well under one percent. In general I have found them to be more helpful than not and they generally align with other forms of evaluation. I absolutely do not find them worthless.
